About Pumpkin Pet Insurance
Pumpkin Pet Insurance is available for purchase in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The plans are backed by the United States Fire Insurance Co. Pumpkin Pet Insurance was started in April 2020 by Alex Douzet, who also helped start Ollie, a pet food company, before.
What Does Pumpkin Pet Insurance Cover?
Pumpkin pet insurance has a plan that helps if your pet gets sick or has an accident. It covers a lot of different health issues and is the most popular type of pet insurance. You can also choose to add a wellness plan if you want. But Pumpkin pet insurance doesn’t have a plan that only covers accidents.
Here are some of the costs that Pumpkin pet insurance can help pay for:
- Accidents such as orthopedic injuries or swallowed objects
- Advance care such as stem cell therapy
- Alternative therapies such as acupuncture
- Behavioral issues
- Cancer and growths
- Dental illnesses
- Emergency visits
- End of life services such as euthanasia, cremation and burial
- Hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia
- Hospitalizations
- Illnesses such as digestive issues or ear infections
- Microchipping
- MRIs and CT scans
- Prescription food and supplements for eligible accidents and illnesses
- Prescription medications
- Specialized care
- Surgeries
- Vet exam fees
- Virtual vet visits for accidents and illnesses
Here are the things Pumpkin Pet Insurance won’t help pay for:
- Pre-existing conditions that began before your policy effective date or during the waiting period
- Dental cleanings that are not used to treat an illness covered by your policy
- Costs resulting from breeding, pregnancy, whelping or nursing
- Veterinary costs that are not directly related to the care of your pet, such as taxes, administration fees, medical waste and medical records expenses
- Experimental treatments
- Elective or cosmetic prostheses or procedures such as tail docking
- Supplements and vitamins used for prevention and general health maintenance
- Grooming and grooming supplies
- Boarding
Pumpkin Pet Insurance helps with curable pre-existing conditions, except for knee and ligament issues. If your pet hasn’t shown signs or been treated for a curable pre-existing condition in the last 180 days, any new symptoms will be treated like a new problem.
Age Restrictions & Waiting Periods
Age Restrictions In Pumpkin Insurance
You can get Pumpkin pet insurance for pets that are at least 8 weeks old. There’s no maximum age limit for buying a new policy with Pumpkin pet insurance. However, other insurers like Healthy Paws and Trupanion may have a maximum age limit of 14 years to start a new policy for a pet.
Waiting Periods In Pumpkin Insurance
Most pet insurance plans have waiting periods, which is a specific amount of time before your coverage kicks in. For instance, with Pumpkin Pet Insurance, you’ll wait 14 days before accidents and illnesses are covered.
While a 14-day waiting period for illnesses is common, some insurers have shorter waiting periods for accidents. For example, Embrace pet insurance starts covering accidents after just two days, and Pets Best pet insurance covers accidents after three days.
Pumpkin Pet Insurance doesn’t make you wait longer for issues like hip dysplasia and ligament problems. But some insurers do have extended waiting periods for these issues. For instance, Embrace pet insurance waits six months before covering orthopedic conditions in dogs, and Pets Best waits six months for cruciate ligament problems.

How does Pumpkin Pet Insurance stack up against other pet insurance companies?
Pet insurance benefits and waiting periods can differ from one company to another. For instance, Pumpkin pet insurance doesn’t have a 24/7 vet helpline, but you can get that service with Healthy Paws, Pets Best, and Spot. Pumpkin does provide an optional wellness plan, but Healthy Paws and Trupanion don’t offer wellness plans.
